Examination Patterns Matrix

Virtually all major banking exams follow a strict online multi-tier testing procedure with explicit sectional timing locks. Tier 1 (Prelims) is a speed-accuracy screening test, qualifying in nature. Tier 2 (Mains) contains complex multi-step reasoning and data interpretation sets that determine selection merit.

1. Standard Clerical & PO Preliminary Testing Layout

Testing SectionQuestionsMarks ScoredSectional Time Lock
English Language3030 Marks20 Minutes
Quantitative Aptitude (PO) / Numerical Ability (Clerk)3535 Marks20 Minutes
Reasoning Ability3535 Marks20 Minutes
Total Testing Framework100 Qs100 Marks60 Minutes (1 Hour)
Penalty Framework: Negative marking of 1/4th (0.25) for each wrong response. Sectional timers are locked — you cannot navigate between sections until the timer runs out. Exception — IBPS RRB (CBT-1): RRB Prelims for Officer Scale I & Office Assistant does NOT contain an English section. It comprises Reasoning (40 Qs / 40 Marks) and Quantitative Aptitude (40 Qs / 40 Marks) — 80 Questions, 80 Marks, composite time of 45 minutes (no sectional locks).

2. Main Examination Core Layouts (PO Cadres)

The Mains exam features a composite mix of objective analytics and an automated typing test for descriptive English communication (standard structure used by SBI PO and IBPS PO notifications).

3. Clerical Mains & Specialist Officer Variations

  • Clerical Mains (SBI/IBPS): 190 Questions spanning 200 Marks over 160 minutes. Sections — Financial Awareness (50Q/50M), General English (40Q/40M), Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (50Q/60M), Quantitative Aptitude (50Q/50M). There is no descriptive test or interview round for clerical selections.
  • Specialist Officer (IBPS SO Mains): Tests proficiency in the technical professional field. For IT, AFO, Marketing, HR and Law — a single objective paper: Professional Knowledge (60 Questions, 60 Marks, 45 Minutes, bilingual). For Rajbhasha Adhikari — an objective paper (45 Questions) and a descriptive professional paper (2 questions), combined 60 marks over 60 minutes.
  • Interview Frameworks: PO and SO selection tracks allocate 20% weight to a face-to-face Interview and Group Discussion block (SBI uses a 50-mark psychometric + interview matrix; IBPS uses a 100-mark interview panel requiring a 40% minimum passing score).
Section IV

Section V

Strategic Action Blueprint for Banking Exams

  1. Master sectional time discipline. Prelims feature strict 20-minute sectional locks — build uniform confidence across English, Reasoning and Math rather than relying on a single strong subject.
  2. Build high speed for speed-math concepts. Practise Vedic math tricks; memorize tables up to 30, squares up to 50, cubes up to 30, and fraction-to-percentage conversions daily to clear the Prelims math cutoff within minutes.
  3. Transition early to Mains-level DI & logical puzzles. Don't wait for Prelims results — start tackling multi-variable seating arrangements and arithmetic-based Data Interpretation alongside routine preparation.
  4. Read financial editorials and keep up with current affairs. Read financial newspapers (e.g., The Economic Times or Livemint) daily to improve reading comprehension speed and stay prepared for GA and interviews.
  5. Implement a strict mock test analysis routine. Take online mocks on a desktop to match exam conditions; review errors using a dedicated log to track speed and accuracy and improve your overall score.
